Outdoor benches are among the more traditional garden pieces of furniture, that have been used for centuries to decorate parks, tree-lined avenues, formal gardens, playgrounds, tennis court or sports centers.
Some types of benches reproduce the classic elements of street furniture, such as the Classica bench which still is one of the most popular in both public areas such as parks or squares and in private gardens. Other benches proposed by Il Giardino di Legno are suitable to create the most intimate areas in private gardens where you can rest in the shade or read a book in peace. One of the best locations for garden benches is near a flowering hedge, or in the shade of creeping ivy, or near a fruit tree. In this way you can enjoy the fragrance of the blossoms and the beauty of nature in bloom.
Benches definitely occupy one of the positions among the oldest pieces of furniture ever. Their origin is lost in the mists of time and consisted of a long, narrow wooden board that rested on the vertical axis. In Tuscany, in the Renaissance, made its appearance the 'panca a dossale' (reredos bench) which rested on shelf fluted legs and the back had a day consisting of a series of elegant Ionic columns or turned balusters. In old France, the bench (or the bank) was called "Banc" and it was an object more rustic, generally very massive that found its place in the home, in front of the fireplace. It was almost never moved and although these benches were used as a seat during meals, it was in fact the table to be moved closer to the bench when necessary, and not the other.
